The MLK Peace Weekend Reception/Press Conference

There will be a MLK Peace Weekend Kick-off Reception and Press Conference on Friday evening January 13, 2006. The reception will highlight all of the upcoming activities for the “Peace Weekend” and will spotlight the contributions of our sponsors. This will be a “thank you in advance” event for those individuals, organizations, and sponsors that have contributed to making the “Peace Weekend” possible. Local and national press will be invited to bring additional media attention for our sponsors.

The D.I.V.A. Conference Weekend Retreat
Friday -Saturday
January 13-15, 2006

Starting on Friday, January 13, 2006 and continuing through Sunday, January 15, 2005, nationally acclaimed author and motivational speaker Michelle McKinney Hammond will be hosting the first national D.I.V.A. Conference Weekend Retreat at the Hyatt McCormick Place Hotel. The conference is an opportunity for women to experience emotional, physical and spiritual renewal and restoration. There will be interactive workshops, discussion groups and small group experiences led by some of the nation’s leading speakers on women’s issues in addition to a special keynote address by the acclaimed conference host Michelle McKinney Hammond. The theme of the conference is “Take the Time to Invest in Yourself!” We are expecting at least 800 registrants for the conference weekend.

State of Wisconsin "King Day" Celebration

Madison, WI

The State of Wisconsin's King Day Celebration is the oldest in the country.  In its 26th year, this year Tony Brown, journalist, PBS Host and Dean of the school of communications at Hampton University and Attorney Fred Gray will be guest for the King Celebration. In addition, invitations have been extended to James Herbert Cameron and Claudette Colvin to come in person and receive lifetime achievement awards. James Cameron is the founder of the American Black Holocaust Museum in Milwaukee, and the only living individual who survived a lynching. He is 91 years old. Claudette Colvin was arrested nine months prior to Rosa Parks at the age of 15 for not giving up her seat on the bus. Both Mr. Cameron and Ms. Colvin have recently received awards for their heroic acts. 
 
Kirk Whalum's appearance would include conducting a 1-hour master class with students from a local area high school jazz band.

The MLK National High School Basketball Classic
Saturday -Monday
January 14-16, 2006

There will be a National High School Basketball Classic featuring some of the top high school basketball players from across the nation. There will be nationally ranked girls and boys teams from across the country, including Marshall High School (Chicago), coached by Dorothy Gaters, the winningest girls basketball coach in Illinois history. This year’s classic will feature over 40 of the top ranked teams from around the country and it is expected to be our biggest tournament to date.

The American Family Insurance, MLK Peace Weekend 2006 “Peace Jam” featuring Jazz/Gospel Saxophonist “Kirk Whalum”. And making a rare Chicago appearance, the fantastic vocalist “Rachelle Ferrell” .

Sunday, January 15, 2006 at 7:00pm at the beautiful Harold Washington Cultural Center, 4701 S. King Drive. The concert will also feature a special performance by WGCI 2005 Chicago Idol Winner, Stephanie Parker! Tickets are just $40-$45 in advance ($50 at the door).
